SAPP through the Ministry’s Department of Animal Health and Livestock Development is promoting small stock production (Goats and Chickens) among the farming households to contribute to improved nutrition status of rural households, improve on their incomes through sales of excess livestock and complement soil fertility improvement through manure. The department in liaison with extension front line staff takes a leading role in identifying beneficiary farmer groups. A group consists of 15 members, and each is given 5 local goats (4 female goats and 1 male goat) on loan in kind which farmers pay through pass on. It is recommended that the male goat is exchanged to the other village to avoid in-breeding.
